Book Club Novel Study vs. Conventional Core Novel Study

Book Club Novel Study vs. Conventional Core Novel Study Although the Book Club approach and the conventional novel study approach are group discussion oriented, the Book Club method is a more efficient way of extracting thorough analysis from multiple perspectives. In the Book Club approach, students are forced to read because we are constantly being evaluated. During discussions, the teacher is always walking around evaluating groups. My group especially was always prepared because of the fear of not getting a good mark due to being unprepared. The fact that we are constantly being evaluated develops pressure on the students, which forces them to prepare for the discussion the night before. Preparing the night before allows for a more in depth analysis. If everyone is prepared with notes and questions the discussion will be much more interesting because everyone brings something to the table.Which in essence allows a much more effective and efficient discussion. However, with the con ventional approach you have majority of the classroom not participating and not being involved in the discussions. In last year’s English class, there were a set number of students who were always participated and then the majority of the class not effectively participating. Because the traditional method is a more broad discussion and there aren’t specific roles for students to carry out students are not pressured to be prepared.I can use myself as an example, last year there would be times I wouldn't read the sections assigned and because of this I found myself not participating and engaging in class discussions. The Book Club approach consists of continuous evaluation and a certain set of tasks like discussion leading that force students to consistently engage in discussions. The evaluation creates pressure, causing students to be prepared and contribute during scheduled conferences. On the other hand, the traditional method of novel study is not as effective. The st udents are not pressured because they feel as if they are not being evaluated on a regular basis. So students take advantage of this and feel their input is not necessary and rest of the class will carry their weight. To conclude, both approaches involve students participating and engaging in a group discussion but the Book Club approach has a higher efficiency in terms of each students input during discussions in comparison to the conventional core study.

Scanning the Environment

Evaluating the relative positions of competitors allows business firms to discover threats and opportunities relative to organizational strengths and weaknesses together with an understanding of the political, economic, socio-demographic and technical forces shaping the competitive environment (Saloner, Shepard & Podolny, 2000). Insights from environmental scanning support sound strategies as shown in the succeeding discussion. Demographics and Socio-Cultural Trends and Choice of Strategy Demographics and socio-cultural trends reflect changes in consumption so that the firm that can match the pace of consumer behavior would likely achieve an edge in the market (Porter, 1998). Amazon Grocery is responding to the growing adoption, by the niche market of non-price sensitive consumers, of the health conscious lifestyle resulting to an increase in demand, for fresh and healthy food products, especially with media buzz on diet and weight-loss regimen by applying the niche strategy. Aldi’s targets a different trend, which is the growth in the middle to low income group leading to the rise in price-conscious consumers seeking low priced products but of high quality. Effect of Advertising on Strategy The audience reached by television and online advertising explains the strong impact of advertising on business strategy (David, 2007). Amazon Grocery likely engages extensively in advertising through both television and online advertising focused on reaching its targeted niche market. Advertising in the timeslot of food and lifestyle shows and creating websites or forums on healthy food suggestions are means of reaching the niche audience. Aldi’s also engages in television and online advertising with a broader perspective because it is targeting a wider market and it has a wide range of options from airing during the timeslot of children’s shows and soap operas together with company website and forums. Relative Positions of Competitors. Collated information on demographics and socio-cultural trends and advertising strategies appears to support Aldi’s better position. Aldi’s targets a wide range of consumers, which means leeway for expansion and growth when compared to the easily saturated niche market of Amazon Grocery. Aldi’s has two value offerings, which are quality and low-price allowing the firm to gain a bigger market share while Amazon Grocery only offers the value of quality healthy and organic foods. Recommended Strategy for the Grocery Store Chain. Based on recent trends and changes in the market, the effective strategy for the grocery store chain is to develop a one-stop store chain providing a section on high quality but low-priced (if not the lowest priced) healthy and organic foods and a section for high quality and low priced (if not the lowest priced) other food items. The grocery could also consider establishing a ready-to-eat and non-food sections both adopting the quality and low price value combination. This would allow the grocery food chain to tap into both the markets of its competitors and reach untapped segments giving it an edge. Strategies and Improving Image as Corporate Citizen in the Community Strategies can enhance the image of firms as contributing members of the community by providing products and serviced that improve the wellbeing of fellow community members (David, 2007). Amazon Grocery supports the health of community members, Aldi’s empathize with the limits of the purchasing power of residents, and the grocery store chain provides every possible need of the community. Conclusion Knowing one’s competitive position and that of close competitors supports the development of effective strategies that create an edge for firms.

Development Application - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1130 Downloads: 9 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Law Essay Type Compare and contrast essay Tags: Development Essay Did you like this example? This essay seeks to illustrate the role that Common law and Case law has played in the development of UK health and safety statute. The author will seek to explain the origins of Common law, its application and its interrelationship with statute law, in terms of statutory interpretation and the doctrine of judicial precedent. Both positive and negative aspects of such systems will be discussed during the course of the essay. The origins of UK common law date back to the reign of Henry II. Prior to the Norman conquest in 1066, Britain consisted of several kingdoms, of which each held their own customary laws and methods of applying and enforcing justice. Although the Normans were successful in their conquest of England at the battle of Hastings in 1066 resulting in the unification of the country, a common legal system was not achieved fully until 1154 during the reign of Henry II through the existing courts of the time, the Kings Bench, Court of the Exchequer an d the Court of Common pleas. The unification of the legal system to commonly apply to all of the countrys subjects was to be applied uniformly and consistently across the country by a circuit of travelling judges, dispensing justice based on past decisions (precedents) in court known as; In terms of the application of a judicial precedent, a court must consider if the earlier decision is applicable as a Binding Precedent, whereby the relevant statement of facts are the same in each case and must be followed by a court of the same or lower standing, or that the earlier decision is applicable as a Persuasive Precedent because, although not all of the criteria of a binding precedent has been met, other factors are contained in the previous decision that maybe influential. In the event of a conflicting point of view on a specific point of law, then the hierarchy of the court system is relied upon; higher courts set legal precedent for lower courts. This was illustrated in the case in the case of Dickins v O2 in 2008, whereby the claimant Ms Dickins had brought a successful claim against the defendant O2 for psychiatric injury due to excessive stress. On appeal, the defendant had argued; Common law and its judicial precedent have the advantage of providing certainty to cases that are the same and also direction to those that are alike. There is also an inherent flexibility within common law that allows for judicial decision to develop with the social expectation of its citizens and general societal change. However, the common law system also has an inherent disadvantage; that judgements on cases are only made following that they have been brought before the court. In the context of health and safety in the UK during the industrial revolution which began at the start of the 18th century, the reactive nature of common law did little to ease the suffering of workers, many of which were children, working in appalling conditions where serious injury and death were commonplace. Statute law, as opposed to common law, is in essence the formulation and enactment legislation by parliament on topics of societal concern that requires legislative control. The term legislation not only covers acts of parliament, but also statutory instruments or delegated legislation. In order to be accepted into statute, an act of parliament begins as a proposed bill (Public, Private or Members) and is required to go through a white paper process of consultation within the houses of parliament and Lords in order to be accepted into statute law. The legislation will only come into force on the day it receives its royal assent or alternatively on the day specified by the act itself. The doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty means that statutes passed by parliament cannot be challenged. Delegated legislation or Statutory Instruments do not go through the potentially lengthy and uncertain consultation process of a Bill and can be made under the authority of its prima ry legislation (enabling act). Statutory instruments have the advantage of being drafted and implemented quickly in response to issues /incidents that have arisen or occurred that require legislation to apply specific duties in order to protect people or the environment from harm. An example of this followed the Piper alpha disaster in 1988 and the subsequent legislative response. The interrelationship between the development of statutory instruments under health and safety legislation, their enforcement and inspection would set a precedent for the way in which future legislation would be developed. However, the Factories Act 1833 and subsequent legislation up until 1974 was compartmentalised and developed in a piecemeal fashion. The only general duties that existed prior to the enactment of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, existed within common law and its judicial precedent (particularly within the Tort of negligence). The volume of case law and statutory legislation con cerning health and safety and the resultant established duties placed upon employers, in correlation with the rapidly expanding and diverse number of industries within the UK by 1970, required a consolidation of UK health and safety law and the application of a generalised approach that gave protection to all employees in all modes of employment. With the formation of the Robens committee in 1970 and its published report in 1972, found that; It follows that there has been an obvious synergy between common law and statute in the development of health and safety legislation. In isolation, they have in their own right been less effective, than in their coming together since the development of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Although the UK workplace has dramatically changed since 1974 with a shift from heavy manufacturing to a service based economy, this has posed new challenges for health and safety law. More recently, the emergence of workplace stress has become a signific ant concern for employers and employees alike. For example, the publication Nursing times stated in 2009; The publication of HSG 218 Managing the Causes of work related stress in 2007 does not appear to be sufficiently effective given that between its publication in 2007, up to 2009, statistics show that cases of stress were broadly the same. Could the absence of statute on the subject be having a negative effect? The author believes so, given that the incidence rate of this work related illness is so high and has not been impacted on by the publication of health and safety guidance. However, the synergy between common law precedent and statute lies paradoxically in the heart of this subject as it did prior to the enactment of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Whereby, common law judicial decision and its subsequent precedents (as seen in Dickins v O2) will give guidance for the future development of legislation that must surely follow in order to make sufficient improvemen ts which will effectively protect employees from work related stress. Unwardliness In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini

owardliness brings one to lifelong suffering! The story, â€Å"The Kite Runner† by Khaled Hosseini takes place over the course of twenty years, first beginning in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1975. Amir the main character, is faced with the cruel burden of cowardliness and guilt as a result of a childhood trauma, he has yet to seek redemption towards. Amirs childhood may seem nothing but perfect to many in Kabul, but his strained relationship with his father, Baba, leads the young boy into a whirlwind of competitive behavior towards the familys Hazara servant Hassan, all to win over Babas affection. Although Hassan is Amirs best friend, Amir feels he is superior to Hassan and takes advantage of him, even though Hassan would do anything in the†¦show more content†¦For example, Hassan is courageous and challenges the neighborhood bully Assef, when he is making fun of Amir in the streets. In the midst of the fight, Assef begins to swing at defenseless Amir, but Hassan musters u p the courage and threatens Assef with his slingshot in order to save his friend from getting hurt. Clearly Hassan strongly entails bravery and courage at the very moment when it is needed the most, and stands up for what is right no matter what Assef could have done to him in the moment, or even in the future. Courage is evidently portrayed through Hassans character, especially through the measures he takes to protect his friend. Meanwhile, Hassans bravery manages to ward off Assef, and keeps the two out of trouble; however the bully promises to get his revenge on a larger scale in the future. Hassan and Amir brush off Assefs warnings as if they were nothing, but should have Hassan and Amir taken the future threats more seriously? Hassan exhibits great amounts of courage and bravery from the very beginning of the book in many ways, while doing so through the actions he himself takes, and the circumstances he subjects himself to. One would learn that Hassan has the courage and brave ry to endure suffering and physical pain in order to remain loyal to Amir who is like a brother figure to him. For example, Hassan has the valor to stick up once again to the neighborhood bully Assef, in the name of successfully

Solar Energy: Solar Panels In the last decades energy consumption has come to a time where people started noticing the climate changes and the effect of fossil fuel energy for not only being environmentally destructive but also causing Global warming (the warming that occurs as a result of increase emissions of greenhouse gases) has become a very big issue worldwide. The fossil fuels (Oil, Coal, and Natural Gas) which is the main sources of the world’s energy sources have negative natural emissions coupled with the human activities that change the atmosphere’s composition (e.g. through burning fossil fuels) have contributed immensely to the global warming which has also effected the climate conditions in the world. Organisational Structure for Assessment of Memo †Free Samples

Question: Discuss about the Organisational Structure for Assessment. Answer: Purpose/prompt: The aim of this memo is to conduct what went wrong for Qantas airlines and what are the initiatives which should be taken by Qantas to cover lost grounds and bring back the trust that the public have on it. Thesis: The flight with 747 passengers on board towards Sydney when and explosion took place in the aircraft engine thus the pilots were forced to land the plane in San Francisco. After this there were two more incidents which took place in Singapore thus the reputation of the airlines was at stake. Preview: Through the successive years of growth, Qantas Airlines had to go through many problems in this particular years. The Qantas of four engine had left from Sam Francisco International airports Boeing about 747 passengers. The plane was on its way towards Sydney as when the explosion occurred in the four engine. The pilots started to dump fuel in the Pacific Ocean and measure a safe successful landing back to San Francisco. It was the first time for Qantas Airlines to face the problem ("Qantas Airways Limited 2011 Strategy Day", 2011). Qantas Airbus A380 return back to Singapore after taking a short take-off as when the explosion cause in the engine of the aircraft on November 9, 2010. Again on the day of November 5, the plane makes a way back to Singapore Boeing 747 passengers due to the fault of an engine. These are some of the cause of Qantas Airways for which the reputation and early revenue is coming low. So, there are some of the ways that the management need to be focuse d on getting back its reputation. 1.Three key issues identified in the case (what went wrong?) During the mishap an oil pipe of the engine got fractured which lead to fire in the engine. After that the turbine engine disintegrated. Later on it was found that the dispute in the engine which was manufactured by Rolls Royce was the main cause of failure. 2.Future actions Qantas can take Few things which Qantas can do to upgrade its technology are usage if cloud for storage of cockpit data, reassessing and reprograming the black box for safety and better flight safety check of every engine before going for the actual run. 3.Factors to consider when using social media Prioritizing the goals is of utmost importance while using social media. Without clear goals the social media plan is useless and also aimless (Six important factors to consider for a social media strategy, 2017). Chalking out the target audience is also important, if the target audience is not known then the channels could not be chosen properly and thus the whole thing would be aimless (Three vital factors to consider when creating a social network ecosystem, 2014). 4.Communication Plan Template 1.Timing Qantas Airlines should take the time of any festival or any other occasion by giving the process of advertisement and offer that the target audience can be targeted by getting opportunities to go through a plane. The audience mainly looks over the advertisement which is given by the organization on any occasion. Therefore that gives a good revenue. 2.Audience Through the planning of communications, a message is delivered to the targeted audience which gives great results to have a great outcome to the management of Qantas Airlines to solve the problem or issues. These processes are taken to get the target audience or passengers directly or by whom the passengers can be influenced. Force media to give a report to the newspaper of the issue and programs. Interest should be vested to OST programs ("Creating a Stakeholder Communications Plan", 2017). Delivers messages through community forums, organized events, and media opportunities. Make direct mail pieces which can be delivered to the target audience. Use other local business to deliver messages to the community. 3.Sender The plan is been taken by Public Relation Officer or Chief Executive officer of the management community to get a communication with the target audience by giving a proper advertisement about Qantas Airlines. The public relation office or Chief Executive officer plan many things like fare discounts, luxury status and other many more liable ideas for the passengers to gets a proper revenue and good status of its organization ("The case for PR at Qantas", 2011). 4.Key Message If the management of Qantas Airlines once has decided to list the target audience then there need of some key messages to develop some unique issue and concerns. The process of key message is done to give relevant communication to the target audience that they can understand the point of view. It is to be important that the management community groups should receive the superseding key message that has set in by the audience (Buhalis, 2003). To get support and also to achieve the business goal the key message is important by the management of Qantas Airlines to get a proper communication with the audience. 5.Desired Outcome Through this process of targeting audience and key message, there is some desire that the management is expecting from the audience. The Qantas Airline's management had taken all types of measurement to get back their reputation. The offer that has given by management on Qantas Twitter page that the first 50 passengers who will win the competition will gain first class seats and amenity luxury kit of Qantas. This is the process that can target the audience and can have a good desired outcomes through its reputation as well as in revenue. 6.Medium Twitter is one of the social networking in high business management. The high revenue people use twitter on every account. Qantas Airlines should take a strategy by distributing its business process like real time updates, reinforce core brand message and respond properly to the passenger's compliments, comments, and comments. Besides Twitter, social networking sites like Wats App and Facebook is other two source of the medium that can be used by Qantas Airlines to distribute their business offer and activities that the passenger can follow or see it and can compare it with other airlines ("QANTAS AIRWAYS LIMITED 2011 STRATEGY DAY", 2011). The Qantas Airlines should also use other social networking sites to go through the business and again to gain its reputation. 7.Materials The make good relation media program, Qantas Airlines management need to develop the materials these above materials. By using the upper materials it is easy to determine that which materials are best for getting those goals by making the most of the company resources. The materials that need to be used by the management of Qantas Airlines are Press Kits: The press kit must be prepared in a way that is stress-free for the news media to use. Press release: A press release should tell the story or news about the organization are trying to deliver ("QANTAS: NOT JUST ANOTHER AIRLINE", 2011). Op-ed articles: Op-ed articles deliver individuals with a chance to remark on subjects that disturb the target audience. Byline articles: it is retained by a projecting person who has reliability in their field. Letter to the editor: permitting individuals the chance to remark on recent news stories or local creativities. Newsletters: interconnect with your audience on a steady basis. Public Service announcement is free airplay that television and radio stations give to non-profit making organizations. Background rally: background videos, may help in receiving the organization news on television. 8.Frequency The advertisement or offer that will be provided by Qantas Airlines management through the networking sites or practically will be frequent so that the audience can get it into their mind. If the process will be frequent than it is best for the audience to catch so they can use the offer and luxury place in the airlines of Qantas. Summary No organization like Qantas can say strongly that their aircraft will not go any problem while traveling. Through this study, it has seen that the Qantas has faced many problems which have locked down their reputation. So, to get back up their position the following process that which have mentioned above are assured to gain back the reputation of Qantas Airlines and will earn more revenue. Reiterate thesis/blueprint The aim of the memo was to create a communication plan for Qantas Airlines to re-communicate with its customers so as to re phrase the image of the airlines which got ruined due to the mishaps. Polite Closure We would hope that Qantas could be able to regain its old image and be on the top list of being the safest airline in the world. References Buhalis, D. (2003). The Use of Leather to Make Cloths Should Be Discou Essays - Hides

The Use of Leather to Make Cloths Should Be Discouraged Most of us love to wear leather shoes and clothes, but have anyone stop and thought whether it is right or wrong to put on products made of leather? Perhaps not. This essay is centered on the argument why the use of leather to make clothing should be discouraged by all means by all governments across the globe so we can save animals and workers. To begin with, many innocent animals are slaughtered each year to cater for the leather industry. According to PETA, the numbers actually go as high as one billion yearly. Slaughtering them may not be a problem but they are reared just to provide leather which makes them to be reared in unfriendly environment awaiting their turns to be slaughtered which is wrong. Animals are transported in unfriendly means to the slaughterhouse. In India for instance where most of the animals for slaughter come from have poor transport conditions which are against the law but traders do it anyway. Indian law requires that a maximum of six animals be transported at a time but this doesn't happen. Animals are taken to the slaughterhouses without being fed because at the end of the day only their hides matter (Tutu 106). Sometimes, leather is obtained in cruel means. In China for instance, calves that have not been born yet are obtained from their mother's wombs because their leather is fine. According to Bekoff (404) obtaining leather from animals is done when some of them are still alive. Under normal circumstances, leather is obtained from animals using chemicals; bactericide solution and sulfides to ensure that leather obtained is of high quality. Employees who work in the leather firms are also exposed to health risks. As mentioned earlier, chemicals are used to make the leather obtained in its highest quality. A study by Rastogi, Pandey and Tripathi (132) reveal that tests done on employees working in leather firms showed that they are exposed to a lot of chromium coming from the animals' urine whose accumulation in the body may lead to Dermatitis and in some cases ulcers and nasal cancer. Opponents of this argument may argue that if not slaughtered for leather, animals are slaughtered for meat which makes leather tanning nothing out of the norm. This argument is lame because some animals such as horses, cats, dogs are not food for everyone thus their slaughtering is a waste of innocent animals' lives. Others may argue that the conditions in which animals for slaughtering are reared in matter less because at the end of the day only its hide matters. This is a misinformed argument because animals are living organisms and deserve to be treated with care. Opponents may still claim that slaughtering in whatever means is cruel in itself. What these people fail to understand is that the concern of leather tanners lies in the quality of leather and not the suffering that animals undergo which is unethical. While some people might argue that the names infections are not limited to leather firms only they are more prevalent in leather firms thus leather tanning should stop in order to save workers health. After all, in leather firms, chromium levels are extremely high. To summarize, evidence in this essay shows that leather used to make shoes and clothes is obtained unethically as it affects the animals and the workers negatively. The negative effects range from animals being slaughtered cruelly, workers being exposed to hazardous situations and animals being reared ruthlessly. Consequently, leather should cease being used for clothes and shoes. Works Cited Bekoff, Marc. Encyclopedia of animal rights and animal welfare. Santa Barbara, Calif: Greenwood Press, 2010. Print.
